Week 23 – First week of medical school was a piece of cake. My eczema did not flare up at all even though it was really humid throughout the days and I walked about a mile to school.
It’s been a while since I last posted! I didn’t even know what week I was on before I wrote this blogpost. In this blogpost I’m going to write a brief summary of each week that has passed since my last one. My eczema as of right now is relatively manageable and definitely better than it has been since the first four months!
Week 17 – During the weekend I went to Chicago for a school reunion! The patches on my hands went through a flare – whenever I itched ooze and blood would come out. I started using a new oil on my hands because I couldn’t bring coconut oil with me on the airplane – S.W. Basics Three Ingredients Original Cream. Four months without topical steroids! In a way I am really surprised that I was able to make it this far without caving in – I’m glad of it though. The past few weeks have been the hardest I have endured thus far but I am now seeing the benefits of fighting through it.
Just hit the 3 month mark last week! It seems like I just started this process but I have learned so much about this condition by letting it go all out.
I haven’t updated in a while but I’ve learned so much in the past two weeks!
- Blood Test: I took a blood test and found out that I am slightly allergic to cow’s milk, sesame seeds, shrimp, and egg whites. Since finding out (during week 10) I’ve eliminated these items from my diet to the best of my ability. I see that I’m relatively less red! The results also told my that I had low Vitamin D and Iron. I’m already taking Vitamin D supplements and I started to take Iron supplements.
- Tamanu Oil: I went to the Saturday Morning Market at the start of Week 11 and bought Tamanu Oil from a vendor. She said that it would reduce the inflammation on my hands and it definitely has! The patches on my hands are less red!
- Epsom Salt Bath: At the beginning of week 10 I soaked my hands in epsom salt water. That was when my dyshidrotic eczema was at it’s worth. It helped a bit because my hands were also super flaky and I was able to get rid of those flakes in a less painful manner. I also felt that my hands were less itchy after the hand baths.
- Exfoliation: After trying the hand baths, I decided to try and exfoliate my hands to get rid of my flakes. I started to realize the flakes were making my hands extremely itchy, especially while I was sleeping! It helped out a lot but the problem was with exfoliating I was in a way scratching my hands and would go overboard with it.
I really don’t know if I’m going through another flare or not. My withdrawal process has been very interesting as I haven’t experienced full body eczema nor a ton of redness. I can tell that my eczema does get worse based of what I eat – sugar is a definitely no-no. I am hoping for recovery soon!
This week so many things have happened. I’ve started to do a ton of research the topical steroid withdrawal journey’s of others and I have officially freaked myself out. Some people don’t get the worsening symptoms until 6 months in! After getting really anxious of what might come, I have mostly stopped looking this up. It is helpful to see what products/routines have worked for others, which is my main focus now.
It’s been awhile since I’ve updated this blog. I’ve been pretty busy with family visiting and traveling but I will try to update the blog weekly from now on. Good news: my fingers are completely healed after all the flakes fell off! Bad news: my face has gotten really bad.
The past week was really difficult to get through but I’m really seeing progress after making all the changes I have to the products I am using and my diet as well as staying on top of things.
